The Red Balloon was a dive Karaoke bar 35/95th. There was a good disco bar in the top floor of the hotel at 69/35/87th. Lenexa had Tanners on 87th and Callahans.
The Grand Emporium was always decent for music. There was a good beer bar and live music upstairs on a N/S street East of the Plaza. Westport had Kelly's, The Hurricane, Dickey's, The Harris House and a few more including some good restaurants like the Prospect. Mark Chmura basically had to carry the guy out. It was the weekend of the 101 Awards banquet. I once saw Brett Favre in McCoy's so hammered he could barely stand up. Im surprised Flair talked about how he couldn't find trouble in KC. IIRC, Tommy Morrison's hangout of choice was whatever that country bar in Westport was called. When you hear Craig Glazer blabber on about having one of the hottest places in Westport, he isn't lying. Stanford and Sons had a late night happy hour, so there were many nights at Kelly's early and Stanford's after 11. In the mid-80s, if you didn't park your car right under a streetlight in Westport, you could guarantee your car stereo would get jacked. If you stayed in the 'burbs, it was Tanner's (especially the 119th location). It just seems like kids these days have more options - river market, downtown, crossroads, Westport, Plaza, Waldo, a few decent places in the 'burbs.īack then, it was, pretty much, Westport and the Plaza (with Hooper's on Wednesday nights).
